The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta is the viceregal representative of the Canadian monarch, King Charles III, in the province of Alberta. The Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the Governor General of Canada on the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada, and serves at the pleasure of the monarch.

The Lieutenant Governor has a wide range of constitutional and ceremonial duties, including:

  • Assenting to and signing legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta
  • Issuing executive orders and proclamations
  • Appointing provincial judges and other officials
  • Receiving and hosting visiting dignitaries
  • Attending and participating in official ceremonies and events

Additional Information

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta is also the Chancellor of the University of Alberta and the Colonel-in-Chief of several military units in the province. The current Lieutenant Governor of Alberta is the Honourable Salma Lakhani, who was appointed in 2021.
