Epicondylitis: An Overview
Understanding Epicondylitis
Epicondylitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the tendons that connect the forearm muscles to the elbow joint. It commonly affects individuals who engage in repetitive motions using the forearm and elbow, such as tennis or golf, hence the nicknames "tennis elbow" and "golfer's elbow."
Types and Causes
There are two main types of epicondylitis: *
Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow): Occurs on the outside of the elbow, caused by overuse or strain of the forearm extensor tendons. *
Medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow): Occurs on the inside of the elbow, caused by overuse or strain of the forearm flexor tendons.
Symptoms
Epicondylitis typically presents with: * Pain and tenderness on the affected part of the elbow * Stiffness and reduced range of motion * Weakness in the affected forearm * Tingling or numbness in the fingers (in severe cases)
Treatment and Prevention
Treatment for epicondylitis involves: * Rest and activity modification * Ice and pain relievers * Physical therapy to strengthen and stretch the forearm muscles * Cortisone injections (in some cases) * Surgery (rarely necessary) Prevention strategies include: * Proper warm-up and stretching before activities * Using proper technique during exercise or work * Strengthening forearm muscles * Resting when pain occurs
